We didn't understand why our healthy, full term baby was being admitted to the NICU which is typically for pre-term babies. Apparently at the same time we arrived ready to bring our baby to our hotel, he had stopped breathing
for a short time, multiple times in a row. This took us by surprise. We really leaned on the doctors and nurses in the NICU to help us understand what was going on.
After a few days and several tests, Hunter turned out to be fine. He was being monitored 24/7 by a superb team in the NICU of this hospital. We can't say enough good things about the staff and their attention to our unique situation. They don't deal with many adoptions, but you wouldn't know it by the way we were treated. They were very professional and accommodating to us the entire time we were there. It was very comforting to know Hunter was in their hands and was getting the best care possible.
So - one hurdle down. Now we waited for clearance from both the state of Texas and the state of Missouri to allow us to leave the state with Hunter, and then to enter Missouri. We didn't have to wait long. Hunter was discharged on Tuesday, and we got the call on Thursday. We were prepared to be holed up in the hotel for at least a few days.
Lucky for us, Texas is quick about signing off for the Interstate Compact, as is Missouri. Couldn't have picked two better states to adopt from and bring the child home to. Someone up there has seriously been looking out for us.
We got some much needed rest on Thursday and decided to head back home on Friday, June 29th. It was a long 13 hour drive. We stopped every few hours with Hunter so we could change and feed him. We rolled into St. Louis in the evening hours on Friday. We all were pooped out.
The dogs were excited to see Dan and I and confused to see Hunter. I'm sure they were wondering why he was there and when he was going back. I could see it from their side. Hunter was tiny, making strange noises and definitely smelled different. I'm happy to say, they are currently adjusting. :-)
So it goes our adventure from Texas. It was a roller coaster ride to be sure, but we came out the other side better then we went in. Very happy to have made the trip and picked up the sweetest baby in the world, even happier to be home.
We have kept things very under wraps for a bit to ensure all the legalities were taken care of. We still have some finalization procedures that will be completed in the coming months. So we have waited to make it Facebook Official. At the time I'm posting this, we have made the announcement on Facebook. And this is how we did it:
2 tickets to Texas: $560
Hotel room for 6 days: $800
Having everyone keep our secret off Facebook about our new son: Priceless
